Some people brag about serving scotch whisky that's 15 years old. But three bottles of Mackinlays scotch flown to Scotland by private jet Monday date back to the late 19th Century.
The bottles are linked to famed explorer Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition in 1907. They were found last year in a crate that had been buried beneath a basic hut Shackleton had used during his dramatic excursion, more formally known as the British Antarctic Expedition.
The crate itself was, unsurprisingly, frozen solid after more than a century beneath the Antarctic surface.
But the precious bottles were found intact, and researchers could hear the whisky sloshing around inside. Antarctica's minus 22 Fahrenheit (-30 Celsius) temperature was not enough to freeze the liquor, dating from 1896 or 1897, and experts said it was in remarkably good condition.
And probably tasty too: It is common in London's look-at-me bars to sell some aged cognacs for 50 pounds ($80) a glass or more, but none of Shackleton's stash will be put on this private market, so no one will know how much consumers would have paid for such a historic dram.
The bottles, part of a cache of 11 bottles found, were judged too valuable to be returned to Scotland on a commercial flight _ for reasons frequent travelers can understand _ so they were flown back in the private jet of Vijay Mallya, owner of Whyte & Mackay's, which bought Mackinlays some years ago.
The Mackinlays whisky will be studied and tasted in a lab for six weeks before being returned to Shackleton's hut under the floorboards of Shackleton's hut at Cape Royds on Ross Island, near Antarctica's McMurdo Sound.
The lab findings will be sent to the Antarctic Heritage Trust.

Comment by Bobby on January 7, 2012 at 8:11pm Martha, oh hell yes I bought it :-)
I don't get that "chill" like you describe. It's more like a quiet laughter "Yay! He got it!" :-)

Comment by Martha on January 7, 2012 at 7:36pm Can we assume you bought it?? Did you get that icy chill down your spine when you saw it?

Comment by Bobby on January 7, 2012 at 6:58pm We were out eating some lunch today and near a Blockbuster in the neighborhood that has been there for ages. It had a sign up stating "Clearance: Everything must go!". Since this is usually a good time to come across a few movies and really good prices that we've never bothered to buy, we went in and took a look around. While looking around, I happened to notice a guy with a stack of videos in his hand. He placed them on an empty shelf and walked out the door as if he looked like he may have forgotten his wallet and went back out to get it. I watched him for a bit and noticed that he just kept going. He didn't stop at a car in the parking lot. My curiosity got the better of me so I walked over to the shelf where he placed his movies for some reason to take a look at what he left behind. Wanna guess what was on top?
Coincidence? You tell me :-)

Yes I think a lot that came across in your ER. I was actually reading it and wishing I could give you a hug and say it's ok dude. :) Your next life will probably be all adventure again so enjoy the break. Enjoy the opportunity to study contemplate and think.

Comment by Bobby on March 6, 2011 at 10:53am @Elaine - Just the follow up I did in the POF where I ask for the specific name of the fragment on that Expedition. Since then, I also have watched 2 DVDs on Shackleton and his expeditions.
Since I don't really see the need to get into past lives just for the purpose of getting into them, because they are after all some "other" person, I think this whole experience helped ease me through a difficult period in this lifetime. Even up until just a couple of years ago, I've felt that I've not really done much with my life. In fact it was much stronger than that. I would say it was outright guilt and even much more so with these last 3 years. With that 2nd ER and this revelation of Cheetham I was able to see I believe a larger plan whereby it was planned that I would set things up for myself so I would be forced to sit still so to speak so I could do a little self-reflection and just catch up. I'm certainly doing that currently :-) There is no reason to feel guilt about choices we make. If we don't like them, they can be changed.
Comment by Elaine on March 6, 2011 at 6:46am I must say this is the first time I even heard of Shackleton's expidition. As child I used to be very interested in Scott, and read a few books about that one.
This must be so exciting for you bobby. Have you asked follow up questions yet?
I'll still print this out for Arno on Monday :)
Comment by Ann H on February 10, 2011 at 8:43pm I love this stuff! The validation of it! And the excerpt from you ER report makes clear that you're doing something else this lifetime as you accomplished a great deal in that life and fulfilled one aspect of the Warrior's need for challenge.
I, too saw a documentary on Shackelton and was so impressed by his (and his companions') perseverance and decency. Isn't there a drama about Shackelton starring Kenneth Branagh?
And perhaps that "Providence" was Essence. And they must have read their Dickens (of course they did!) as Pegotty is the major character of comfort and warmth and acceptance in "David Copperfield."
Bobby, that was such a lived life. It gives me goosebumps.
